Abstract

The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in Kalimantan Timur in September 2011 was 247.13 thousand (6.63 percent). Compared to the poor population in March 2011 which amounted to 247.90 thousand (6.77 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell by 770 people.

During the period March - September 2011, the poor population in urban areas fell by 4.2 thousand people and in rural areas rose by 3.5 thousand people.

In March 2011, the number of poor people living in rural areas was 11.26 percent, greater than those living in urban areas (3.80 percent).

The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health). In September 2011, the GKM contribution to GK was 71.42 percent.

In the period March-September 2011, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) increased. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor moves away from the poverty line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor also widens.
