POVERTY LEVEL IN KALIMANTAN TIMUR MARCH 2013

Abstract

The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in Kalimantan Timur in March 2013 was 237.96 thousand people (6.06 percent). Compared to the poor population in September 2012 which amounted to 246.11 thousand people (6.38 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell 8.2 thousand people.
During the period September 2012 - March 2013, the poor population in urban areas fell by 1.1 thousand people and in rural areas decreased by 7.1 thousand people.
In March 2013, the poor who lived in rural areas were 9.90 percent, greater than those living in urban areas (3.71 percent).
The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health). In March 2013, the GKM contribution to GK was 72.35 percent.
In the period September 2012 - March 2013, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) declined. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor is closer to the poverty line and that inequality in expenditure of the poor is also narrowing.
