Abstract

The number of poor people (population below the poverty line) in Kalimantan Timur in September 2012 was 246.11 thousand people (6.38 percent). Compared to the poor population in March 2012 which amounted to 253.34 (6.68 percent), meaning the number of poor people fell by 7.2 thousand people.

During the period March - September 2012, the poor population in urban areas fell by 3.7 thousand people and in rural areas fell by 3.5 thousand people.

In March 2012, the number of poor people living in rural areas was 10.56 percent, more than those living in urban areas (3.82 percent).

The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health). In September 2012, the GKM contribution to GK was 71.64 percent.

In the period March-September 2012, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) declined. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor is closer to the poverty line and that inequality in spending by the poor is also narrowing.
